stop bent back baby fingers (and other atrocities)!

When it comes to worrying about random crap, there's one tool that lets me get the job done right: a mental map of the world. You know those Verizon and AT&T commercials that show the United States all lit up with their service coverage? I imagine the whole world that way, except that each little light dot represents a place where some poor infant has his fingers bent back in a knit sweater sleeve that mom or dad is trying to get his arm through. This bothered me a lot more when Zoralee was tiny. Sometimes I'd find myself in a hot sweat over it.

Another common one is tags on children's clothing. Those things drive me, a full grown adult, absolutely bonkers, so imagine what tiny babies go through when their neck is irritated and they can't communicate about it! I laid in bed tonight thinking about the world filled with lights - all the places where tags are driving helpless babies insane.

And then I thought, I can do something about this. I have a blog. I am the only one with a blog just like mine. Someone else's might be similar - stillwalkingandtheorizing, or stillplayingwithLegosafteralltheseyears - but nobody else might be getting this message out there:

GO SLOWLY PUTTING BABY'S HANDS THROUGH SLEEVES (FEEL FOR 4 FINGERS AND A THUMB). ALSO, CUT OFF CLOTHING TAGS UNLESS THEY'RE EXCEPTIONALLY SOFT.

Good night.

OH, AND MAKE SURE THEIR LEG ISN'T BENT BACKWARDS IN THE CARSEAT, FOR PETE'S SAKE.

'night.

What would this world do without you?

Okay, the really strange thing is that last night Max and Caden asked me to cut off these super-scratchy tags from their new pajamas. And I had to wonder how many times they wanted that same thing back when they couldn't communicate.

I bet you didn't guess that someone would comment that they had been thinking the same thing.

Amy, she is. She IS.

This is cracking me up because I remember you lying in bed awake at nights worrying about the fingers through the sleaves thing. That is just too weird.

I must say though, it's a more realistic worry than your new "what if we had to get on an island and Jason and David were there, would we bow in humility or show our chests in strength fear", but anyways.

This post was great.

I am glad you're filling my head now with plenty of little things to worry about, because there's a chance I wouldn't have thought of some of these on my own (God forbid!) and my kid would've been screwed.

Zoralee is lucky to have a mom who will sacrifice sleep to get all this stuff figured out for makind.

GUESS WHAT!

There are quite a few companies PRINTING the tag info on the inside of the clothing instead of having a tag! BRILLIANT!

A few off the top of my head...

Gap, Gymboree, Old Navy...alot of clothes at Target....WAHOO! YEAH!

I hear ya on the fingers thing...never had that happen but ouchie!

My pet peeve is people who don't strap their kids properly in their car seat...

What is the point if the upper buckle is at belly button level (instead of above armpit level) or if the car set moves around alot ...geez people! If you were in a wreck (I was in a roll-over with all my kids I KNOW what I am talking about) then your kiddo would fly right out! Get a clue!

Thanks for letting me use your blog as a sounding board...maybe I'll go put it on my blog too!

Whenever (if ever) I have children, I really do think I'll remember to be really careful of their little fingers.
