most interesting quote of my day

"My husband and I wanted our daughter to have a name that people can spell and that she could find on a key chain or a mug. My nieces can't get the LeapFrog Violet dog to say their names. Sad."
- commenter on this article about 2010's top baby names

Shoot! Jason and I haven't even considered the key chain issue while we've been nailing down baby names! Why didn't somebody point this out sooner? We better adjust our priorities, because if there's one thing that's important in life, it's being sure that at every filthy gas station across the country, you can find a piece of leather or plastic onto which a machine has clearly articulated your name.

To be clear: I totally get choosing a common name! I just don't get doing it on the basis of the LeapFrog being able to pronounce it.

Sarcastic much? :)

One of my friends named their son Gruffydd (pronounced Griffith). How's that for unique? Poor chap will never know the grandeur that is small plastic license plates. *tear*

I know. I sounded like a real beotch there, so I went back and added a line of clarification.

So wait, Gruffydd, pronounced Griffith? I don't get it.....is this in an English-speaking country?

Thanks, Lori, (and Rachel) for providing my evening's laughs on your blogs today!

LOL! I know I've never met you, but I don't think you could be a beotch!

As for Gruffydd: I believe it's old Welch or something of the sort. Like, REALLY old Welch....

Hahaha! Okay, sister. Now I see what your text was about. Hahaha! But I agree with Emili. I've known you for my entire life, and have only seen you be a beotch on 4 or 5 occasions and this wasn't one of 'em.

This was funny. And I love Zoralee's name. It took a while to fully grow on me (like, maybe a day) but now it has. Who cares that she still can't fully pronounce it. One day she will be able to and it'll be so much more worth the wait to have an awesome unique name.

Here's the thing, LORI, try going on a road trip around the United States with PAUL and MATT and stopping at a filthy gas station in every state to pick out a souvenir. Paul gets a mug that says PAUL. Matt gets a shot glass that says MATT. What does Darbi get? A spoon that says WELCOME. In every state. It might not matter that the Leapfrog dog calls Zora, Sara, but when she's the girl who's collecting her 49th welcome spoon do you know what she'll want next? Black eyeliner and a tattoo...Don't say I didn't warn you.

Crazily enough, Leapfrog does know Zora! Not Zoralee, but that would be asking a lot.

You know I love her name more than anything. And I love mine. I'm just a little bitter about the spoons. Could you tell? =-)

lori said...

Yes, Darbi. The generic spoons have obviously left small, roundish scars across your heart. I am sorry. But I bet you can find plenty of "Darby" paraphenalia, and with a little scratching and tweaking, it could work!

Aha!!! Finally, something I can truly say that you stink at in parenting skills! What a silly, silly quote! I don't have a single thing with my name on it and I seem to function fairly good....on most day...ha ha.
